Strip lining of existing support
When the ends of the support have weakened new cloth strips are adhered along the tacking margin to reinforce it (strip lining).
Total lining of existing support
The complete reinforcement or relining of the cloth support (lining) is a very old method, and includes applying an auxiliary layer of cloth onto the old lining to help correct the extensive damage of the existing lining. The process of relining begins with the application of a special paper (Japanese paper) on the painted surface of the work, to provide a stable environment for image of the work during the conservation procedures. Lining is recommended in the following scenarios:
- Damage and deformation of the cloth support
- Fragmentation or hardening of the cloth support
- Separation of the painting layers (lifting)
- Extensive deformation
- Flaking and cracks
